Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival in Delhi
Namaste! Your guide welcomes you at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and escorts you through the streets alive with honking rickshaws, wandering cows, and the scent of woodsmoke and jasmine. Check into your hotel and rest. Early evening brings a gentle introduction to Delhi with a walk at India Gate and the wide boulevards of Lutyens' Delhi, followed by dinner at an elegant restaurant serving North Indian frontier cuisine: tender kebabs, smoky dal makhani, and butter naan baked in a tandoor.
D2 Delhi — Old & New
Explore Delhi's dual identity. Morning: Humayun's Tomb in the soft light, its red sandstone and white marble dome a precursor to the Taj. Qutub Minar, the 73-meter Victory Tower of Islamic rule over India. Lunch in a Haus Khas courtyard cafe. Afternoon: a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, where the aromas of sizzling parathas, perfumed attar oils, and centuries-old spice shops assault the senses. Climb Jama Masjid's minaret, then visit Raj Ghat, Gandhi's simple memorial. Evening: the illuminated Red Fort from outside as the sun sets.
D3 Delhi to Agra
Drive south to Agra, crossing through the fertile Gangetic plain. First stop: Sikandra, Akbar the Great's sandstone tomb set in a deer-dotted garden. Arrive in Agra by midday. Visit Agra Fort in the afternoon, walking through the marble halls where Shah Jahan spent his imprisoned final years gazing at his masterpiece across the river. The Diwan-i-Khas with its inlaid gems still whispers of Mughal opulence. Sunset at Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna: the Taj Mahal silhouetted against a tangerine sky, the river flowing silver below.
D4 Agra — Taj Mahal & Fly to Varanasi
Rise before dawn — the Taj at sunrise is why you're here. Walking through the great gate reveals the monument in stages: first the archway frames the white dome, then the full mausoleum opens before you above the long reflection pool. Watch the marble change from misty grey to warm gold as the sun climbs. Inside, delicate pietra dura inlay of lapis lazuli, carnelian, and malachite forms floral patterns on the cenotaph. After breakfast, fly to Varanasi, the oldest continuously inhabited city on Earth. Evening: the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat — priests in saffron robes swirling flaming lamps in synchronized worship as thousands watch from the steps and boats, chanting filling the air.
D5 Varanasi — Ganges Sunrise & Old City
Board a rowboat before dawn and drift along the Ganges as the riverfront slowly awakens. Watch the first bathers step into the sacred waters, priests offering morning pujas, bodies shrouded for cremation at Manikarnika Ghat, and the sun rising over the opposite bank — an unbroken ritual spanning millennia. After the boat ride, walk through the old city's galis, impossibly narrow alleys where cows squeeze past chai stalls and ancient temples hide in plain sight. Visit the Golden Temple (Kashi Vishwanath), one of Hinduism's holiest shrines. Lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the river.
D6 Sarnath & Varanasi Silk
Morning excursion to Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment 2,500 years ago. The Dhamek Stupa marks the spot, and the archaeological museum holds the magnificent Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem. After lunch, visit a Varanasi silk weaving workshop to see the creation of the city's famous Banarasi silk saris on Jacquard looms, a craft passed down through generations. Evening free to revisit any favorite ghat or simply absorb the city's unique spiritual atmosphere. Your guide can recommend a classical music performance if interested.
D7 Return to Delhi
After a final Ganges sunrise from your hotel rooftop, fly back to Delhi. The afternoon is yours for independent exploration or shopping: Dilli Haat crafts market for handmade items from across India, Khan Market for books and clothes, or the National Museum for a comprehensive history of Indian art. Farewell dinner at a famous Delhi restaurant, perhaps Bukhara for its legendary dal and tandoori specialties.
D8 Delhi Free Day & Departure
Your last morning in India unfolds at your pace. Shop, explore, or simply relax by the pool. Depending on your flight time, your guide may arrange a final visit to the Lotus Temple or a Sikh gurdwara for the moving experience of the community kitchen (langar). Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, carrying the fragrance of spices, the glow of sunrise at the Taj, and the sound of temple bells along the Ganges.
