Detailed Itinerary

D1 Arrival in Chennai
Arrive at Chennai International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the capital of Tamil Nadu. In the evening, visit Marina Beach — India's longest urban beach — for a stroll along the sand as vendors sell roasted corn and the city unwinds in the sea breeze. End at the colorful Kapaleeshwarar Temple, where a towering gopuram covered in vividly painted deities glows in the evening lamps. Travel tip: temples require removing shoes and covering shoulders and knees; carry a scarf or shawl for easy modesty.
D2 Chennai to Mahabalipuram
Drive south along the Coromandel Coast to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO-listed wonder of Pallava art. Explore the Shore Temple, poised between land and sea, then marvel at Arjuna's Penance — a giant open-air bas-relief carved with gods, animals, and celestial beings across a massive rock face. Enjoy a lunch of crispy dosa with sambar and coconut chutney at a seaside cafe, then spend the afternoon wandering the Five Rathas, monolithic temples carved from single boulders in the shape of chariots.
D3 Mahabalipuram to Thanjavur
Continue the temple trail to Thanjavur, the heart of the great Chola Empire, breaking the journey at Chidambaram to visit the Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Shiva as the cosmic dancer — its inner sanctum is one of the holiest in Shaivism. Arrive in Thanjavur by evening and settle into your hotel. For dinner, taste Chettinad chicken, a fragrant pepper-and-star-anise curry from Tamil Nadu's famous spice belt.
D4 Thanjavur — Chola Empire
Stand in awe before the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the crowning achievement of Chola architecture — its 66-meter vimana (tower) is capped by a single granite block weighing over 80 tons, somehow raised into place a thousand years ago. After lunch, visit a bronze casting workshop to watch artisans create the iconic Nataraja statues using the lost-wax process, a technique unchanged for a millennium. The detail and devotion in each piece is humbling.
D5 Thanjavur to Madurai
Drive south to Madurai, the oldest continuously inhabited city in South India and the soul of Tamil culture. After checking in, head to the Meenakshi Amman Temple in the evening to witness the night ceremony, where a procession carries the image of Shiva to the bedchamber of the goddess Meenakshi accompanied by drums, horns, and the chanting of priests — a nightly ritual that has been performed for over 2,000 years.
D6 Madurai — Temple City
Dedicate a full day to Madurai's Meenakshi Amman Temple, a vast complex of 14 towers covered in 33,000 brilliantly painted sculptures — every mythological figure, demon, and deity seems to writhe and dance across the gopurams in a fever of color and devotion. Visit the Thousand Pillar Hall, where each column is carved with unique figures, then continue to Thirumalai Nayak Palace, a 17th-century fusion of Dravidian and Islamic styles. End at the Gandhi Museum, housed in a historic palace, to learn about India's independence struggle.
D7 Fly to Hampi
Fly from Madurai to Hubli via Bangalore, then drive through the surreal boulder-strewn landscape to Hampi, the capital of the legendary Vijayanagara Empire. Arrive by late afternoon and climb Matanga Hill for sunset — the view over the sprawling ruins, the winding Tungabhadra River, and endless banana plantations is one of India's finest panoramas.
D8 Hampi — Vijayanagara Empire
Explore the magnificent Hampi ruins on a full-day tour, starting at the Virupaksha Temple, where worship has continued uninterrupted since the 7th century. Walk to the Vittala Temple to see the iconic Stone Chariot — a granite shrine carved to look like a temple chariot — and the musical pillars that produce different notes when tapped. Enjoy a South Indian thali lunch at a local eatery overlooking the river, then wander the ruins at your own pace as golden light bathes the boulders.
D9 Hampi — Royal Center
Discover the Royal Center of the Vijayanagara Empire: the elegant Lotus Mahal with its fusion of Hindu and Islamic architecture, the massive Elephant Stables where royal pachyderms were housed in arched chambers, and the Queen's Bath, an indoor pool surrounded by delicate balconies. In the afternoon, cross the Tungabhadra River by coracle — a traditional round basket boat — to visit riverside shrines and see the landscape from the water.
D10 Hampi to Goa
Exchange the arid boulder-strewn landscape of Hampi for lush coastal greenery as you drive west through the Western Ghats to Goa. Arrive by late afternoon and check into your beachside hotel. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner on the sand — Goan fish curry, fresh naan, and a chilled Kingfisher beer as the waves roll in and eleven days of South Indian wonders play back in your memory.
D11 Departure
Enjoy a final Goan breakfast before your transfer to Goa Airport. Collectibles to seek: Tanjore bronze figurines, handloom Kanchipuram silk, Hampi stone carvings, or a bag of fragrant Kerala spices. Namaskaram and dhanyavad — thank you and safe travels.
