Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival in Leh
Land at Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, one of the highest commercial airports in the world at 3,500 meters, where the thin air immediately reminds you that you have arrived in the Himalayas. Transfer to your hotel and do absolutely nothing for the rest of the day — mandatory complete rest is the golden rule of acute mountain sickness prevention. Drink plenty of water, sip hot ginger-lemon-honey tea, and let your body slowly adjust to the altitude. Travel tip: avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and strenuous activity for at least the first 48 hours; the altitude demands respect.
D2 Leh Acclimatization
Begin gentle exploration of Leh with a slow, unhurried pace. Visit the gleaming white Shanti Stupa, built by Japanese monks to promote world peace, with panoramic views over Leh town and the stark, beautiful Indus Valley. Continue to the crumbling nine-story Leh Palace, a 17th-century royal residence reminiscent of Tibet's Potala, then wander the lanes of the Leh market where Ladakhi women in traditional gonchas sell dried apricots, pashmina wool, and turquoise jewelry. Sip butter tea — a savory, salty Tibetan brew — at a local cafe and continue acclimatizing.
D3 Leh Monasteries
Venture into the Indus Valley on a full-day monastery circuit. Start at Thiksey Monastery, a spectacular complex cascading down a hillside like a mini Potala Palace, whose two-story Maitreya Buddha statue fills the main prayer hall with serene golden light. Continue to Hemis, Ladakh's largest and wealthiest monastery, set in a hidden valley where the annual Hemis Festival erupts in masked dances each summer. End at Shey Palace with its 12-meter copper-gilded Shakyamuni Buddha, framed by snow-capped peaks. Return to Leh for a dinner of thukpa — warming Tibetan noodle soup.
D4 Leh to Nubra Valley
Embark on one of the world's great road journeys: the drive over Khardung La at 5,359 meters, one of the highest motorable passes on Earth. Stop at the summit for photos amid fluttering prayer flags and a cup of tea at the highest cafeteria you will probably ever visit, then descend into the surreal landscape of Nubra Valley — a high-altitude desert where sand dunes meet snowy peaks. In the evening, ride a double-humped Bactrian camel through the dunes of Hunder, their bells jingling softly in the thin air, as the sinking sun sets the peaks ablaze with alpenglow.
D5 Nubra to Pangong Lake
Drive through the dramatic Shyok Valley route to Pangong Lake, a journey through some of the most starkly beautiful terrain on the planet — barren mountains in shades of ochre, purple, and rust, with the fast-flowing Shyok River carving through. Arrive at Pangong Lake at 4,350 meters and watch the famous blue waters shift through a dozen shades of turquoise, azure, and indigo as clouds and sunlight play across the surface. Settle into your luxury camp beside the lake and watch the stars emerge in a sky utterly free of light pollution — the Milky Way arcs overhead like a river of diamonds.
D6 Pangong to Leh
Wake before dawn to watch the first light paint Pangong Lake in impossible shades of blue — a sight that will stay with you forever. After breakfast, begin the drive back to Leh via Chang La Pass at 5,360 meters, watching the landscape transform from high-altitude lake basin to mountain desert to the green thread of the Indus Valley. Arrive in Leh by late afternoon and rest before a farewell dinner of momos and a local Ladakhi specialty: skyu, a hearty wheat-based stew cooked with root vegetables and yak cheese.
D7 Departure
Enjoy a final breakfast with views of the Stok Kangri range before your transfer to Leh Airport. The flight out over the Karakoram offers one last look at the moonland you have called home — a landscape that feels more like another planet than another country. Pick up pashmina, dried apricots, and prayer flags as gifts. Julley — Ladakhi for hello, goodbye, and thank you — until the mountains call you back.
