Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival in Kunming
Welcome to the "City of Eternal Spring"! Kunming's mild climate and year-round blossoms greet you as your guide meets you at Changshui Airport. Transfer to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure — wander Green Lake Park where locals practice tai chi, play traditional instruments, and feed the flocks of red-beaked seagulls that winter here. For dinner, try Across the Bridge Noodles, Yunnan's signature dish: a steaming bowl of chicken broth into which you add rice noodles, sliced meats, quail eggs, and fresh herbs at the table. Rest up for a deep dive into one of China's most diverse regions.
D2 Kunming — Stone Forest
Journey to the Stone Forest, a UNESCO geopark where limestone pinnacles eroded over 270 million years create an otherworldly labyrinth of grey spires and hidden pathways. Walk among the formations, learning from your guide about the Sani Yi legend of Ashima, a beautiful maiden turned to stone. Lunch at a local Yi minority restaurant, featuring wild mushrooms and Yunnan ham, prized products of this region. Return to Kunming for a stroll through the fragrant Flower Market — Yunnan is China's flower basket — and Green Lake Park in the golden afternoon light. Evening is free to explore Kunming's cafe scene.
D3 Kunming to Dali
Board the high-speed train after breakfast for a swift two-hour ride across the Yunnan plateau to Dali, a city framed by the towering Cangshan Mountains and the vast Erhai Lake. After settling in, explore Dali Ancient Town with its cobbled streets, stone walls, and the iconic Three Pagodas, which have stood between mountain and lake for over 1,200 years. The Bai ethnic minority's influence is everywhere: from the elegant whitewashed courtyard houses to tie-dye fabrics drying in the sun. Enjoy a dinner of Bai specialties like er kuai rice cakes and Dali beer, brewed from Erhai's water.
D4 Dali — Erhai Lake
Grab a bicycle this morning and pedal along Erhai Lake's shores, where fishermen still use trained cormorants to catch fish — a centuries-old tradition now fading. Stop at Xizhou Bai village and walk through the morning market, sampling baba, a flaky flatbread filled with minced pork or sweet red bean paste. Visit the Yan Family Compound, a beautifully preserved Bai mansion. For lunch, taste rushan, Dali's grilled cheese fan drizzled with rose petal jam. In the afternoon, try your hand at traditional Bai tie-dye at Zhoucheng, dipping bound cloth into indigo vats to create your own souvenir. Return to Dali for a sunset drink with views of Cangshan.
D5 Dali to Lijiang
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive north to Lijiang, winding through mountain valleys and past terraced hillsides. Arrive in the UNESCO-listed Lijiang Old Town, a labyrinth of cobbled canals, arched stone bridges, and wooden Naxi courtyard homes dating to the Song Dynasty. Visit Mu Palace, the sprawling former residence of the Naxi ruling clan, combining Ming Dynasty architecture with Naxi cultural motifs. As lanterns begin to glow, explore the old town's alleys and bridges, listening for Naxi ancient music drifting from tea houses. Sample Naxi baba flatbread from a street vendor.
D6 Lijiang — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Ride the cable car to 4,506 meters on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, where thirteen peaks scrape the sky above an alpine wonderland. The thin air and panoramic views will leave you breathless in every sense. After descending, visit Baisha village with its 600-year-old Buddhist and Taoist murals preserved inside a small temple, painted by Han, Tibetan, Naxi, and Bai artists working together in the Ming Dynasty. Return to Lijiang and enjoy a free evening — perhaps visit a tea house or sample Naxi hot pot at a canal-side restaurant.
D7 Tiger Leaping Gorge
Set out early for Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest river canyons in the world, where the Jinsha (upper Yangtze) roars between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains. The full-day hike follows a trail carved into vertiginous cliffsides, with breathtaking views at every turn. Stop for lunch at a guesthouse along the trail, where the owner will tell you stories of the tiger that legend says leapt across the 25-meter gorge. The hike is well-maintained but involves lots of steps — sturdy shoes and water are essential. Return to Lijiang for a well-earned dinner.
D8 Lijiang to Shangri-La
Drive north through ever-higher terrain, stopping at the Yangtze First Bend where the river executes a dramatic U-turn before carving the gorge you hiked yesterday. Climb into the Tibetan cultural region and arrive in Shangri-La (Zhongdian), a town at 3,300 meters surrounded by snowy peaks and alpine meadows. Visit Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, often called "the Little Potala" for its golden roofs and white walls. Explore Dukezong Ancient Town, whose 1,300-year-old streets were rebuilt after a devastating fire, yet retain their Tibetan soul. Enjoy yak butter tea and a dinner of Tibetan hot pot.
D9 Departure from Shangri-La
After a final high-altitude breakfast, transfer to Shangri-La Airport for your departure flight over the patchwork of alpine meadows and distant snow peaks. As you rise above the clouds, carry with you the memory of Yunnan's incredible diversity: from Bai tie-dye to Naxi music, from Tibetan lamas to Yi stone forests. China's most colorful province will linger in your imagination long after you touch down.
