Detailed Itinerary

D1 Arrival in Beijing
Welcome to China! Upon arrival at Beijing Capital airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, take a leisurely stroll along Wangfujing snack street to sample candied hawthorn sticks and grilled skewers. For dinner, warm up with a bowl of hand-pulled noodles at a bustling local noodle house. The evening is yours to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead. Travel tip: pick up a Beijing subway card at any station — it is the easiest way to explore the city independently.
D2 Beijing — Imperial City
Start your morning on the vast expanse of Tiananmen Square before entering the magnificent Forbidden City, where 24 emperors once ruled behind towering vermilion walls. Spend the afternoon climbing Jingshan Park's hill for a breathtaking panoramic view of the palace's golden rooftops stretching to the horizon. In the evening, hop on a rickshaw for a winding tour through the narrow hutongs, then share a home-cooked family-style dinner with a local household. Travel tip: book your Forbidden City tickets online at least three days in advance — they sell out quickly.
D3 Beijing — Great Wall
Rise early for the scenic drive to Mutianyu Great Wall, a beautifully restored section with far fewer crowds than Badaling. Take the cable car up and spend the morning walking between watchtowers, soaking in views of the wall snaking across forested ridgelines. Enjoy a well-earned lunch of hearty northern Chinese dishes, then ride the thrilling toboggan slide back down to the valley. In the evening, savor an authentic Peking duck dinner as chefs carve the crispy lacquered skin tableside. Travel tip: wear sturdy shoes — the wall steps are steep and uneven in places.
D4 Beijing — Summer Palace
Spend the morning at the Summer Palace, strolling along the world's longest painted corridor and cruising Kunming Lake aboard a dragon boat. Visit the ornate Marble Boat and climb Longevity Hill to the Tower of Buddhist Incense for sweeping garden views. After a lunch of Beijing-style zhajiang noodles, continue to the Temple of Heaven, where locals gather to practice tai chi, play cards, and sing opera under ancient cypress trees. In the evening, board an overnight train or catch a short flight to Xian. Travel tip: book a soft-sleeper berth on the overnight train for the most comfortable ride.
D5 Xian — Terracotta Warriors
Arrive in Xian, the ancient capital of 13 dynasties and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. Spend the morning at the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors Museum, standing face-to-face with thousands of life-sized soldiers buried in battle formation for over two millennia. Enjoy a lunch of Xian's famous biangbiang noodles — thick belt-like noodles drenched in sizzling chili oil. Explore all three excavation pits in the afternoon before returning to the city. In the evening, indulge in a grand dumpling banquet accompanied by a colorful Tang Dynasty music and dance performance. Travel tip: visit Pit 3 and Pit 2 first, saving the vast Pit 1 for last — its scale is truly overwhelming.
D6 Xian — City Wall & Muslim Quarter
Begin the morning with a bike ride atop Xian's ancient city wall, the most complete fortified wall in China, offering a 14-kilometer loop with striking contrasts of old and new Xian. Afterwards, dive into the Muslim Quarter, where the air is thick with the scent of cumin, chili, and sizzling lamb skewers. Sample crispy persimmon cakes and freshly pounded sticky rice cakes for lunch. Visit the Great Mosque, one of China's oldest and most architecturally unique Islamic sites, hidden within a warren of bustling market lanes. Travel tip: rent an electric bike if you are not up for pedaling the full 14-kilometer wall circuit.
D7 Fly to Guilin
Take a morning flight to Guilin, where the landscape transforms into an ethereal dreamscape of limestone karst peaks shrouded in mist. After landing, enjoy a lunch of Guilin rice noodles with sour beans, peanuts, and braised pork — the city's beloved signature dish. In the afternoon, visit Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin's iconic natural limestone arch, followed by the dazzling multicolored formations inside Reed Flute Cave. As dusk settles, walk around Shanhu Lake to admire the Sun and Moon Pagodas beautifully illuminated. Travel tip: bring a light jacket into Reed Flute Cave — it stays refreshingly cool year-round.
D8 Li River Cruise
Embark on a full-day cruise down the legendary Li River, winding through a living gallery of karst peaks — the very landscape immortalized on China's 20-yuan banknote. A freshly prepared lunch is served on board as you glide past water buffalo grazing on riverbanks and cormorant fishermen on bamboo rafts. Disembark in Yangshuo and check into your hotel. The evening is yours to wander West Street, where backpackers and locals mingle, and raise a cold Tsingtao beer to an unforgettable day. Travel tip: claim a seat on the upper deck's left side for the best photography angles.
D9 Yangshuo Countryside
Start the morning cycling through Yangshuo's storybook karst countryside, passing emerald rice paddies, pomelo orchards, and farmers in conical hats tending their fields. Pause for a serene bamboo raft ride on the tranquil Yulong River, drifting silently under ancient stone arch bridges. Enjoy lunch at a farmhouse restaurant specializing in beer fish — Yangshuo's signature dish cooked with fresh local river catch. In the afternoon, transfer to Guilin airport for your flight onward to Shanghai. Travel tip: hire a local guide who knows the quietest back roads to escape the crowds.
D10 Shanghai — The Bund
Morning visit to Yu Garden, a 16th-century classical garden with dragon-capped walls, rockeries, and lotus ponds, followed by the bustling Old Town Bazaar where the aroma of soup dumplings fills the air. After lunch at a legendary xiaolongbao restaurant near the City God Temple, walk the BundShanghai's grand waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Cross the Huangpu River via the sightseeing tunnel and gaze up at the futuristic Pudong skyline. For dinner, explore a local Shanghainese restaurant tucked away in a side lane. Travel tip: visit the Bund around golden hour to capture both day and glittering night views.
D11 Shanghai Discovery
Ascend Shanghai Tower in the morning — China's tallest building — for a breathtaking 360-degree view from the 118th-floor observation deck. Stroll through the leafy plane-tree avenues of the French Concession, stopping at a sidewalk cafe for coffee and a croissant in the city's most romantic neighborhood. Browse the boutiques and galleries of Tianzifang, a maze of beautifully refurbished shikumen lane houses. Gather for a farewell dinner featuring Shanghainese specialties like red-braised pork, hairy crab, and pan-fried pork buns. Travel tip: the French Concession is best explored by shared bicycle — lanes are plentiful and flat.
D12 Departure
Savor a final Chinese breakfast of warm congee with pickles and crispy youtiao fried dough sticks before checking out. Transfer to Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao Airport for your departing flight, carrying home vivid memories of imperial cities, ancient wonders, misty karst peaks, and the electrifying pulse of modern China. Travel tip: allow at least two hours at Pudong Airport — it is one of the busiest aviation hubs in Asia.
