Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival in Phnom Penh
Arrive at Phnom Penh International Airport and transfer to your riverside hotel in Cambodia's capital city. After settling in, take an evening stroll along the Mekong River promenade, where the setting sun paints the water gold and locals gather to picnic, practice tai chi, and fly kites in the warm evening breeze. Travel tip: tuk-tuks are the best way to get around Phnom Penh — agree on a fare before you set off, or use a ride-hailing app.
D2 Phnom Penh — Royal & Tragic
Begin your morning at the magnificent Royal Palace complex with its gleaming golden spires, then step inside the Silver Pagoda to see the floor paved with 5,000 silver tiles and the life-sized golden Buddha encrusted with diamonds. Enjoy a leisurely lunch of beef lok lak — stir-fried pepper beef with lime — before a sobering afternoon at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school turned prison under the Khmer Rouge. Continue to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a memorial stupa filled with victims' skulls stands as a powerful reminder of Cambodia's tragic past.
D3 Phnom Penh to Battambang
Depart Phnom Penh after breakfast for the scenic drive northwest to Battambang, Cambodia's laid-back cultural capital, passing through rice paddies and sugar palm-dotted countryside. After checking in, explore the charming riverside town on foot or by bicycle — its well-preserved French colonial architecture, sleepy streets, and artistic cafes make it one of Cambodia's most pleasant surprises. Enjoy dinner at a riverside restaurant with a plate of Khmer red curry.
D4 Battambang — Bamboo Train & Caves
Experience one of Cambodia's quirkiest adventures — the bamboo train, a simple bamboo platform on wheels that zips along old railway tracks through rice fields and villages. Continue to Phnom Sampeau, a sacred hill topped with pagodas and a sobering cave memorial from the Khmer Rouge era. As dusk descends, position yourself for one of nature's great spectacles: millions of bats streaming out of the cave in a swirling black river across the twilight sky, a breathtaking exodus that lasts for over twenty minutes.
D5 Battambang to Siem Reap
Drive from Battambang to Siem Reap via Sisophon, passing through classic Cambodian countryside scenes — ox carts on dusty roads, children waving from school gates, and the ever-present sugar palms silhouetted against wide skies. Arrive in Siem Reap by late afternoon and check into your hotel. In the evening, head to the lively Pub Street area for a well-earned meal and perhaps a fish pedicure from one of the quirky street-side spas.
D6 Angkor Wat Sunrise
Rise before dawn for the unforgettable sight of the sun rising behind the five towers of Angkor Wat, its silhouette reflected in the temple's lotus ponds. Spend the morning exploring the vast Angkor Thom complex, marveling at the 216 colossal faces of the Bayon, then wander through Ta Prohm, where strangler figs and silk-cotton trees have merged with ancient walls in an epic battle between nature and architecture. Cool off with a sugar cane juice before returning to town for a late lunch of fish amok.
D7 Banteay Srei & Floating Village
In the morning, make the journey out to Banteay Srei, a small but magnificent temple of pink sandstone whose intricate carvings are considered the finest examples of classical Khmer art — every surface blooms with deities, dancers, and floral motifs. After lunch, visit a floating village on Tonle Sap Lake, gliding past houses on stilts, floating schools, and fishermen casting nets, before exploring the eerie beauty of a flooded forest where trees rise straight from the water.
D8 Departure
Enjoy one final Cambodian breakfast — perhaps num banh chok, the classic rice noodle dish with fish gravy — before your transfer to Siem Reap Airport. Pick up some Kampot pepper, palm sugar, or a handwoven krama scarf as a lasting reminder of this gentle, resilient land. Safe travels.
