Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival in Bangkok
Sawadee ka! Welcome to the Land of Smiles. Your guide greets you at Suvarnabhumi Airport and navigates Bangkok's legendary traffic to deliver you to your hotel. After refreshing from the flight, take your first tuk-tuk ride through the neon-lit streets to a riverside restaurant. Savor your first authentic Thai dinner — perhaps tom yum goong, the fragrant shrimp-and-lemongrass soup, and a plate of pad thai cooked in a smoking wok. Your guide will share tips on navigating the city, from the BTS Skytrain to bargaining at markets while staying polite and smiling. The adventure has just begun.
D2 Bangkok Temples & Palaces
Begin at the Grand Palace, the dazzling complex of gilded chedis, mirrored mosaics, and mythical yaksha guardian giants that served as the royal residence for 150 years. Marvel at Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred image, carved from a single piece of jade. Cross to Wat Pho and recline before the massive 46-meter golden Buddha, then browse the temple grounds that house Thailand's first school of traditional massage. Lunch at a canalside restaurant on aromatic green curry. In the afternoon, zip through khlong canals on a long-tail boat, peeking into a vanishing world of waterside wooden houses. Evening: ascend to a rooftop bar for sunset over the Chao Phraya.
D3 Ayutthaya Day Trip
Travel north to Ayutthaya, the former Siamese capital sacked by the Burmese in 1767. Cycle among the haunting ruins of Wat Mahathat, where a stone Buddha head has been embraced by banyan tree roots for centuries, and Wat Phra Si Sanphet with its three iconic chedis. Lunch on boat noodles, a rich dark broth traditionally served by vendors paddling the canals. Return to Bangkok in the late afternoon for free time — perhaps a traditional Thai massage to work out the travel kinks before tomorrow's journey north.
D4 Bangkok to Chiang Mai
After breakfast, fly to Chiang Mai, the rose of the north, where the pace slows and the mountain air cools. Check into your hotel near the old city, then walk to the Three Kings Monument for an introduction to Chiang Mai's Lanna heritage. Ascend the 306 steps of the Naga Serpent staircase to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai's most sacred temple, perched on the mountain and glowing gold in the afternoon sun. The panoramic view takes in the entire city and the Ping River valley. Descend as the sun sets for the Sunday Walking Street Market (or Saturday market), where hill tribe textiles, silver jewelry, and sizzling sai ua sausage stalls line closed-off streets.
D5 Chiang Mai Elephants & Crafts
Spend the morning at an ethical elephant sanctuary where you'll feed, bathe, and observe rescued elephants in a natural setting — a profoundly moving experience that supports conservation over exploitation. Enjoy a simple Thai lunch at the sanctuary. In the afternoon, visit Sankampaeng handicraft district to watch artisans at work: silk weavers, umbrella painters, silver smiths, and lacquerware craftsmen. End the day at the Night Bazaar, one of Chiang Mai's most famous markets, where you can browse hill tribe crafts and hunt for fragrant spices and colorful lanterns.
D6 Thai Cooking & Temple Trail
Begin with a visit to a fresh market to learn about Thai ingredients — galangal, kaffir lime, holy basil, and more — before heading to a countryside cooking school. Under the guidance of a local chef, prepare your own Thai feast: perhaps green curry, tom kha gai, pad kra pao, and mango sticky rice. After enjoying your homemade lunch, explore the old city's temples on foot: Wat Chedi Luang with its massive partially ruined stupa, Wat Phra Singh with its exquisite Lanna architecture, and the serene Wat Chiang Man, Chiang Mai's oldest. Farewell dinner at a riverside restaurant featuring khao soi, Chiang Mai's signature creamy coconut curry noodle soup.
D7 Departure
After a final Thai breakfast of fresh tropical fruit and coffee, transfer to Chiang Mai Airport. As the mountains recede, you carry with you the scent of lemongrass, the taste of khao soi, the glitter of golden temples, and the genuine warmth of Thai hospitality. La gorn — goodbye for now, but Thailand always welcomes you back.
