Detailed Itinerary
D1 Arrival & Shinjuku
Arrive at Narita or Haneda Airport and meet your guide for a comfortable transfer to your Shinjuku hotel, the pulsing heart of modern Tokyo. After settling in, step out into the electric energy of Shinjuku as twilight descends: towering LED screens, streams of pedestrians, and the hum of a city that never sleeps. Wander through Omoide Yokocho ("Memory Lane"), a narrow alley of tiny, smoky izakayas where salarymen unwind over grilled skewers and cold highballs. Continue to Golden Gai, a warren of six-seater micro-bars each with its own eccentric theme — your guide knows which doors welcome first-timers with a smile. Enjoy a bowl of shio ramen and your first taste of Tokyo nightlife before retiring to your hotel. Travel tip: pick up a Suica card at any JR station for seamless travel on trains and buses throughout the city.
D2 Shibuya & Harajuku
Begin your morning at the legendary Shibuya Crossing, the world's busiest pedestrian scramble, where up to 3,000 people surge across at each light change — view it from the second-floor Starbucks for the iconic overhead perspective. Pause for a photo with the loyal Hachiko statue, then walk the leafy path to Meiji Shrine, a serene Shinto sanctuary within a 175-acre forest that feels worlds away from the surrounding urban chaos. Write a wish on an ema plaque and breathe in the hushed air of ancient cedars. Exit into Harajuku's Takeshita Street, a kaleidoscope of youth fashion, rainbow cotton candy, and crepe stands. For lunch, grab a fluffy Japanese-style souffle pancake at a Harajuku café, then explore the upscale boutiques of Omotesando before an afternoon of browsing in Shibuya's trendsetting shops.
D3 Asakusa & Akihabara
Travel east this morning to Asakusa, the old downtown district that preserves a Tokyo of centuries past. Enter through the magnificent Kaminarimon Gate with its giant red lantern and follow Nakamise shopping street, one of Japan's oldest, lined with stalls selling freshly made ningyo-yaki cakes, folding fans, and Edo-era crafts. At the end of the path rises Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple, where incense smoke wafts and devotees toss coins before the great hall. Enjoy a traditional lunch of tempura-don near the temple. In the afternoon, dive into the neon-drenched world of Akihabara Electric Town: browse multi-floor arcades, retro game shops, and anime megastores, or try a themed maid café for a uniquely Tokyo experience. Your guide knows the best spot for gachapon capsule machines. Evening is free — consider a river cruise back toward central Tokyo.
D4 Nikko Day Trip
Escape the city on a full-day excursion to Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage site set amid the forests and waterfalls of Tochigi Prefecture. Visit the lavishly ornate Toshogu Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan, where gold leaf and intricate wood carvings — including the famous "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys — dazzle at every turn. Break for a mountain lunch of yuba (tofu skin), Nikko's signature delicacy, served multiple ways at a traditional restaurant. Continue to Kegon Falls, where water plunges nearly 100 meters down a basalt cliff, and ride the elevator to the lower viewing platform for the dramatic upward perspective. Weather permitting, visit Lake Chuzenji, a serene crater lake created by a volcanic eruption millennia ago, before returning to Tokyo for a free evening.
D5 Tsukiji & Departure
Rise early for a visit to Tsukiji Outer Market, the lively retail district that survived the wholesale market's relocation, where you can sample fresh sashimi, tamagoyaki on a stick, and grilled seafood skewers from early-morning vendors. After grazing through the market, join a sushi-making masterclass led by a professional chef in a nearby kitchen studio, learning the proper techniques for seasoning rice, slicing fish, and assembling perfect nigiri — then enjoy your creations for lunch with a cup of warm green tea. Return to the hotel to collect luggage and transfer to Narita or Haneda Airport. Before departing, pick up Tokyo Banana cakes and beautifully wrapped seasonal wagashi at the duty-free shops. Until next time — mata ne, Tokyo!
