Detailed Itinerary

D1 Depart Hanoi by Night Train
Depart Hanoi in the evening aboard the overnight train to Lao Cai, settling into a comfortable sleeper cabin as the city lights fade into the darkness of the Red River Delta. The gentle rocking of the carriage and the rhythmic click of the tracks make for a surprisingly restful night's sleep — an adventure in itself. Travel tip: pack a light jacket and your trekking clothes in a small overnight bag; the train cabin storage is snug.
D2 Sapa — Cat Cat Village
Arrive at Lao Cai station in the early morning and transfer by mountain road to Sapa, where mist clings to the peaks and terraced rice fields cascade into the valley below. After a warming bowl of pho for breakfast, trek downhill to Cat Cat Village, home to the Black Hmong people, and watch artisans dye indigo fabrics and pound hemp by hand. In the afternoon, browse Sapa Market for embroidered textiles and try grilled sticky rice cakes from street vendors.
D3 Lao Chai & Ta Van Trek
Set out for a full-day trek through the Muong Hoa Valley, one of Vietnam's most beautiful hiking routes, where rice terraces sculpted over centuries cascade down the valley in every shade of green. Pause in Lao Chai Village to meet Hmong families and learn about their daily life, then continue to Ta Van Village, nestled beside a stream. As evening falls, arrive at your homestay with a Red Dao family — share a home-cooked dinner and a shot of rice wine by the fire while your hosts explain the significance of their embroidered red headdresses.
D4 Fansipan & Return to Hanoi
Rise early for a steaming breakfast at the homestay before taking the Fansipan cable car to the summit of Indochina's highest peak at 3,143 meters — the views stretch over a sea of clouds and jagged mountain ridges all the way into China on a clear day. Descend back to Sapa for lunch, then board the afternoon bus to Lao Cai. As night falls, settle back into your sleeper cabin on the train to Hanoi, lulled to sleep by memories of mountain trails and warm hospitality.
D5 Arrival in Hanoi
Arrive in Hanoi in the early morning, the soft dawn light breaking over the capital as your train pulls into the station. Transfer to your hotel for a refreshing shower and breakfast, or head directly to Noi Bai Airport for your onward flight. If you have time, the train station area has excellent pho stalls — one last bowl before you go.
